51JMZW86R3L._SL500_AA240_Last night I tried a few new recipes from “Cooking with Nora.”  Nora Pouillon, that is, owner of Restaurant Nora at Florida and R St. and the chef behind its tasty New American cuisine.  Nora uses seasonal, local ingredients and the recipes in the book are easy to follow.  She is also the force behind the Dupont farmers’ market!  The book is organized into four-course menus by season (I did not cook a four-course meal, however).  Even though we’ve had some cooler weather I decided on a menu from the “summer” section, because the ingredients featured in the summer menus are still in season.

I chose ten tomato salad to start, which is what it sounds like: ten kinds of tomatoes, plus basil and a balsamic vinaigrette with a little garlic.  Then, grilled shrimp with mango-avacado relish and watercress.  This also includes a generous dose of cilantro, my favorite herb.  For dessert, peaches in red wine with mint.

Nora’s book is great for a few reasons.  First, the recipes are simple but not too simple– Nora definitely seasons her food well.  Second, Nora’s book gives nutritional information for each recipe and seems to be all-around healthy.  She’s light on the butter.  Third, the pictures are beautiful and she gives suggestions on how to plate things.  Finally, she recommends wine pairings, which I haven’t paid much attention to so far but could prove helpful.  I’ve attended a few wine tastings but spent more time socializing than listening, so I still don’t know much about wine.

The food turned out great!  See my photos after the jump.

DSC00485At today’s farmers’ market it was clear that the season is changing.  No more blackberries, no more blueberries.  Instead, Honeycrips apples!  I am sad to see the berries go but I will take Honeycrisp apples over berries any day of the week.  They are huge and perfectly tangy.  I didn’t go at the end of the market today so I didn’t get any great deals, but I did get a lot of deliciousness:

Honeycrisp apples and peaches from Quaker Valley Orchards

Cheese curds from Clear Spring Creamery

Mesclun mix and summer savory from Gardener’s Gourmet

If you have a good summer savory recipe, I’d like to hear about it.  I’d never heard of summer savory before but sometimes at the market I buy things that look appealing and figure out what to do with them later.  I haven’t found a summer savory recipe yet that looks enticing (despite my googling), although the herb itself is pretty and fragrant.  I would love to get suggestions.  But doesn’t it look nice?

Today’s Dupont farmers’ market settled a long-running debate I’ve been having with myself, namely whether it is better to go early (less crowds, my pick of the produce) or late (end-of-market pricing).  Going late is the clear winner.  Today I was there at 12:45, only 15 minutes before the market closes, and got half-priced raspberries and peaches.  They are ripe and ready to eat, so the vendors were pushing to sell them before the market closed.  Also, the vendors frequently replenish the produce and other goods from their trucks, so it isn’t true that arriving early gives you your pick of the best stuff.

This end-of-market pricing may be more prevalent in the summer, though, as fall/winter produce like kale and butternut squash tends to keep longer.  I’ll test this in the coming months.  As for today, here was my take:

Spelt bread from Atwaters

Peaches and string beans from Spring Valley Orchard Farm

Blackberries from Black Rock Orchard

Aug. 16, 2009 Farmer's Market

The Dupont farmers’ market was especially hot and crowded today, but I managed to pick my way through the melon tasters and baby strollers to score the following:

Beautiful white Hydrangeas, three for $10 at Wollam Gardens

Free bunch of basil with any tomato purchase at Tree and Leaf Farm

Perfectly ripe white peaches and blackberry jam from Quaker Valley Orchards, one of my favorite booths at the market.  The staff is so friendly and helpful, and the quality of their produce is always top-notch.  (In the Fall, they have the very best Honeycrisp apples you will ever taste!  I can’t wait.)

Not bad for 20 minutes at the market!
